Famous as the only Buddhist kingdom in the world, Bhutan is also known as druk Yul, or "the land of the thunder dragon". For centuries, Bhutan remained closed to the outside world. Only recently did it open its doors to foreigners. Nonethless, only a limited number of visitors are allowed to enter this exotic land.

Bhutan has managed to preserve its pristine culture and tradition without yielding to the forces of modernity that have threatened indigenous cultures in the rest of the world. Life in Bhutanese villages remain unchanged since time immemorial.

Bhutan is now accessible by air. There is a direct flight from Kathmandu to Paro, the only airfield in Bhutan. An orientation talk and a documentary presented by the Bhutan Tourism Corporation on your first evening in Bhutan prepare you for your travels. There are countless ways to enjoy this unique Land. Visit the Bhutanese national museum situated in a fort. Scroll around Thimpu watching the locals garbed in their traditional constumes. Visit the fort of Tashichho Dzong and the old capital of Punakha. Enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Chomolhari which, at 7316 m. is the highest peak in Bhutan. And best of all, relish the hospitality of a Bhutanese family and their traditional butter tea.
